CHARLES  SHARP  Carving Pipes for half a Century!!   "Welcome!  Since you’re reading this then you must share my passion for fine
pipes and tobacco – a love affair, influenced by my grandfather, which started
well over fifty years ago.  When I think about it now, it’s actually hard to
remember a time when I wasn’t a pipe smoker.

After many years in the Tool and Die trade an opportunity presented itself that
allowed me to mix my love for pipes and tobacco and the skills that I had
accumulated.  In 1971 an existing retail tobacco shop in the Eastern United States came up for sale – it seemed like the stars had lined up – I had to
give it a try

The shop came with a pot belly stove and some pretty interesting clientele –
actors Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Jason Robards and Sterling Hayden, talk show
host Jack Parr, and singer song-writer Neal Sedaka where were among my regular
customers. They seemed to be attracted to the pot belly stove and weren’t averse
to spinning a yarn or two - Jason Robards was an especially great story teller.
It was a very enjoyable time in my life.  It was also very educational.

After operating the store for a short while, I started to do pipe repairs.  As
my repair and restoration skills increased it was a natural jump to start
crafting pipes for the shop as well. 20With my tool and die background and the
wood working experience I had gained making furniture, I proceeded to design and
make the tools that I felt I’d need to get started.  Although I was fortunate to
have a pretty interesting customer base, probably more important for my
fledgling pipe making business, were the friendships that I made with those in
the trade – Herman Lane of Lane; Milton Sherman, noted tobacconist and author
(his book “All About Tobacco” although out of print is still widely quoted to
this day); pipe-maker Bill Craig – who gave me some of his equipment and, more
importantly some great advise; and, lastly, Tim West, noted pipe-maker and
restorer (though we’ve never met in person, Tim, through countless emails and
phone conversations,
was and still is a very valued resource).  Having the shop also afforded me the
opportunity to study the work of some of the world’s great pipe crafters

The more pipes I made the more that I wanted to continue to make – it really was
the perfect outlet for my life experience.  My art background served me well
with the design aesthetics, and the tool and die background in the all important
engineering necessary for a great smoke.  My first efforts met with success and
caught on well in the store – they soon began to outsell my regular brands. It
wasn’t long before I was seeing new customers in the store requesting my pipes -
referrals from my regular customers. Word of mouth spread to mail orders –what
started as a trial with a few pieces of briar now turned into buying it by the
bag load.  It got to the point that I had to move my pipe crafting from the
backroom of the store to the basement of my house.
In 1981, after being in business for ten years I sold the shop, but I couldn’t
walk away from pipe making – I loved it too much and it had become an important
part of my life.

For the past 20 plus years I have continued to craft pipes as well as repair and
refurbish other fine brands – selling the ones I make by word of mouth.
